FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of contact lens services do you provide?

+

NYC Eye & Vision Care offers a full suite of contact lens services, including fittings and care for soft contact lenses, gas permeable (rigid) lenses, scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, specialty soft prosthetic lenses, EyePrintPRO custom lenses, and Ovitz HOA lenses.

What is EyePrintPRO, and how is it different from regular contact lenses?

+

EyePrintPRO is a custom prosthetic scleral lens made via an impression (a mold) of your eye’s surface. It’s designed to perfectly mirror the eye’s contours, offering better comfort, fit, stability, and visual clarity for severe corneal irregularities—cases where traditional lenses often fail.

Who is a good candidate for EyePrintPRO lenses?

+

Patients who have had poor success with standard lenses due to conditions such as severe keratoconus, post-surgical corneas, irregular astigmatism, corneal scars, or ocular surface disease (including very dry eye) are good candidates.

What are soft contact lenses, and when are they used?

+

Soft contact lenses are flexible, comfortable lenses suitable for many vision correction needs—nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, etc. They’re often used when the eye shape is relatively regular and traditional lenses are tolerated.

What are gas permeable (rigid) lenses, and why choose them?

+

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are made of durable materials that allow oxygen flow. They provide sharper vision in many cases, especially for people with certain irregularities or who need more visual precision. They may take longer to get used to but often deliver better optics.

What are hybrid lenses?

+

Hybrid lenses combine a rigid, gas-permeable center for sharper vision with a soft outer skirt for increased comfort. They’re designed for people who need the optical quality of a rigid lens but also want enhanced comfort.

What are scleral lenses, and what advantages do they offer?

+

Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid lenses that vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (white of the eye). They create a tear-filled chamber over the cornea which helps with comfort, especially for people with irregular corneas, dry eye disease, or post-surgical corneal issues.

What are Ovitz HOA (Higher Order Aberration) lenses?

+

Ovitz HOA lenses are specialized lenses designed to correct complex optical imperfections (higher order aberrations) in the eye that standard corrective lenses often can’t address. They aim for sharper vision especially in challenging visual conditions.

Do you provide prosthetic contact lenses?

+

Yes, we offer cosmetic soft prosthetic lenses. These are meant for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes—e.g., for disfigured or injured eyes—and designed to restore appearance or function.

How do I know which type of lens is best for me?

+

We do a detailed eye exam, measure your corneal shape (often using advanced diagnostic tools), understand your vision goals, lifestyle, whether you have dry eyes or irregularities, then recommend the lens type that offers the best balance of comfort, clarity, and health.

What diagnostic and fitting technologies do you use?

+

Some of our advanced technologies include the Eaglet Cornea & Scleral Profiler, Heidelberg OCT, Nidek OPD Scan III, Ovitz HOA lenses technology, Pentacam, Topcon Cornea Analyzer. These allow for precise measurement of the eye’s surface, mapping of irregularities, and high-quality fitting.

What problems or eye conditions can specialty lenses help with?

+

Specialty lenses can help with keratoconus, post-surgical corneas (after LASIK or transplant), irregular astigmatism, scars, dry eye, ocular surface diseases, very high prescriptions, and cases where standard lenses are uncomfortable or ineffective.

How is the fitting process for EyePrintPRO conducted?

+

It begins with an ocular impression, similar to a dental mold. This impression is used to build a 3D model of your eye and to fabricate a scleral lens that matches its exact contours.

Do you serve pediatric cases or very high prescriptions?

+

Yes. We have expertise with challenging fittings, including pediatric aphakia (lack of lens in children), and very high prescriptions.

What role does CooperVision play in your practice?

+

We are a Platinum fitter for CooperVision, which means we handle advanced lens fitting using their products, and have special experience/training to use their range of lenses—especially for difficult or complex cases.

Where are you located and what are your hours?

+

We have two locations in Manhattan:
• 310 East 14th Street, South Building, Suite 304, New York, NY 10003
• 1080 Fifth Avenue, Unit 1C, New York, NY 10128
Hours are generally Monday through Friday, 9:00 am–5:00 pm. For more details, please visit our contact page.

Do you accept new patients for specialty lens fittings?

+

Yes. We welcome new patients, including those seeking specialty contact lens services.

Is there a follow-up or adjustment period once I get specialty or custom lenses?

+

Yes. Because specialty lenses like scleral or EyePrintPRO are custom and often used for irregular eyes, there is typically follow-up to ensure fit, comfort, and visual clarity, and adjustments may be needed.

Can you help people who have never worn contacts before or have struggled with wearing them?

+

Absolutely. We provide personalized solutions, education, and trial fittings. We aim to help even those who have had difficulty in the past with contact lens comfort or fitting.

What kinds of materials are used in your lenses?

+

We use a range of materials depending on the lens type: soft hydrogel and silicone hydrogel for soft lenses; rigid gas permeable materials; hybrid materials combining soft skirts with rigid centers; prosthetic soft supplies; high-precision scleral lens materials for EyePrintPRO, etc. The specific material depends on your eye’s needs and the lens design.
